Family and childhood form the thematic framework of the first exhibition curated by Moshtari Hilal (b. 1993, Kabul), who serves in a dual role as both artist and curator. The exhibition begins with the question of how childhood experiences influence artistic practice. What role do memories of family celebrations, photo albums, and the parental home play on the one hand, and flight, displacement, and growing up in the diaspora on the other?
The group exhibition features works by eight female artists who grew up in various European countries after their families left Afghanistan. Despite their individual biographies and very different artistic expressions, they are united by a shared reservoir of images, objects, and narratives from memory.
The accompanying program for the exhibition is organized by the Afghan Visual Arts & History (AVAH) collective.
